Key Note Session – Tim Jarvis

We have locked in the amazing and inspiring, Tim Jarvis, as our Keynote Speaker for the 2024 FTMA National Conference.

Tim is an environmental scientist, author and adventurer with Masters degrees in environmental science and environmental law. He is committed to finding pragmatic solutions to major environmental issues related to climate change and biodiversity loss and uses his public speaking engagements, films and books about his expeditions and sustainability work to promote progressive thinking in these areas.

Tim is founder and leader of 25zero, a climate-change awareness-raising project that focuses on the world’s rapidly melting equatorial glaciers, and Global Ambassador for WWF-Australia. Tim was named Australian Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year 2013 and Conservationist of the Year 2016, the only person ever to receive both awards.

In March 2013 explorer and environmental scientist Tim Jarvis led a team that made the first successful retracing of legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 Antarctic survival journey. Using the same rudimentary equipment, period clothing and technology as Shackleton, his team sailed a replica James Caird lifeboat 1500 kilometres across the Southern Ocean from Elephant Island to the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, before climbing through the island’s mountainous interior with virtually no equipment or provisions. This is the first time that anybody has been able to recreate Shackleton’s journey, regarded by many, Sir Edmund Hillary included, as the greatest survival journey of all time.

Tim will talk about the lessons learnt from both the Shackleton Epic Expedition and his current climate change awareness project 25zero to talk about leadership, problem-solving, risk management, resilience, teamwork, motivation and goal setting in an organisational and personal context.
